Environmental Issues

We all need to be aware of the amount of energy and resources that we use.  Our energy resources are finite, the more we use up natural resources, the fewer there are for future generations.

Designers are responsible for ensuring that the products they create will minimise damage to the environment.  On way of doing this is to follow these three Rīs

Reduce

Aim to reduce the amount of:
  • materials being used by making them thinner lighter or smaller
  • energy used in the manufacture of products

Re-cycle

Consider if:
  • the product could be made from reclaimed or recycled materials
  • it will be easy to recycle the product when it is no longer needed

Re-use

Try to specify parts or components that could be easily re-used when the product is finished with.

Think carefully about the maintenance of the product.  Will it be easy to repair or replace parts when they fail?
